Edwin was born August 27, 1933, in the Pratt Ninnescah Hospital to Clyde S. and Orpha S. (Randle) Boots. He attended Isabel Consolidated School and one year at Kansas State College. He served two years in Japan with the US Army. February 11, 1956, he married Shirley Wehling. They were married 63 years before her death in 2019. Their daughter Diana was born in 1957 and they lived in Isabel for three years while Ed worked as a mechanic and welder. In 1959 he moved his family to the western Kansas farm. Ed and Shirley adopted two sons, Bradley in 1966 and Brian in 1968. Ed served on various committees in Finney County, helping start a rural fire department on which he served 37 years. He served on the Garden City school board, the Finney County ASCS committee, and Conservation District board, the Finney County Extension executive committee, and the Ag committee. As part of the United Methodist Conference Farm Issues Task Force he gave presentations about the plight of the farmers in the 1980s. He served 27 years as Garfield Township Clerk. Ed was lay leader of Kalvesta United Methodist Church, helping build a new church at Kalvesta in 1964. Ed and Shirley led a very active youth group at the Kalvesta church. They were inducted into the Kansas Master Farmer – Homemaker organization class of 1992. When crops were poor Ed ran a grader for Finney County, did mechanic work, drove a school bus, and measured land for the ASCS Office. He began no till farming in 1975. For several years he was asked to take part in seminars on no till and limited till farming. In 1990 he put together a state-of-the-art seed cleaning facility. In 2007 Ed retired from the seed cleaning. Ed and Shirley moved in 2002 to Pratt where they purchased a home, adding a shop where Ed did many projects for their church, friends, and family. Ed served on Pratt First United Methodist Church Board of Trustees and as church treasurer. He was available to help with any project. His men’s devotion group provided fellowship and support. Ed and Shirley were faithful in supporting their church and many charities, and Ed made it his mission to do visitations to many. Preceding him in death were his parents, wife Shirley, and grandson Ryan. Surviving him are his sister, Clydene Boots of CA; daughter Diana (Dr. Jerry) Nixon of Wichita; grandson Grant (Dr. Courtney) and great-grandson Riley Nixon of CA; sons Bradley (Alicia) Boots and grandchildren Aaron (Diane) and great-granddaughter Aliza; David (Anna) Boots; and Dayna Boots of Kansas City; Brian (Angela) and grandson Finley Boots of Dallas, as well as many extended family, including Shonda (Wheeler) Collins of Garden City, KS who they helped care for as a baby, and his sweetheart, Louise Reimer. Visitation will be Friday, September 16, from 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. and with family receiving friends from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Larrison Mortuary, 300 Country Club Rd, Pratt. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 17, 2022 at First United Methodist Church, Pratt. Burial will follow at Isabel Cemetery, Isabel.
