Trent Valley Archives is hosting its annual plant sale Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon at 567 Carnegie Ave, just north of the zoo.

This sale is a great opportunity to purchase your plants for fall planting. This time of year is an excellent time for planting as the warm soil helps roots become established in preparation for next year’s growing season, resulting in more blooms and robust plants next spring.

The sale will include perennials, herbs and small shrubs. If you’re not sure what plants to purchase, gardening books and knowledgeable gardeners will be on hand to help you identify the best species for your garden.

If you have plants to donate, please drop them at the Archives before Friday, Sept 9. If you have questions, call the TVA at 705-745-4404 or email Heather at admin@trentvalleyarchives.com.

The Peterborough Field Naturalists (PFN) have organized a birding walk for Saturday, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. along the path on the south drumlin at Trent University. This area, a combination of forest, field, and water, is often very productive for sighting a variety of birds, especially during migration. The walk will be led by Chris Risley who knows the area well and will help participants spot and identify species. Accessibility is easy.

Bring your binoculars and dress according to the weather of the day. Register after Sept. 6, by contacting Chris at risleych@gmail.com. The meeting place and further details will be provided after registration.

The walk is open to PFN members only. Visit peterboroughnature.org to learn how to become a member and all the advantages of doing so.

The Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre (OTCC), home of Kawartha Turtle Trauma Centre, urgently needs turtle care volunteers. Do you have a passion for the environment and animals? This may be the perfect opportunity for you.

Turtle Care volunteers help with the ongoing care of the injured turtles that are in the rehabilitation process at the centre, such as feeding and cleaning tanks. These turtle patients can often spend up to a year at the hospital as they recover from their injuries.

Volunteers must be able to travel to the OTCC which is located at 1434 Chemong Rd., Unit 4, Selwyn. They must be at least 18 years old and be able to commit to one 3.5-hour shift per week for a minimum of three months. This program involves attending a volunteer orientation before starting to work with the turtles.

What are the benefits to the volunteers? You gain transferable skills, make lasting connections and friendships, and have fun while knowing you are helping species at risk.

If this sounds like a good fit for you, email info@ontarioturtle.ca for further information.
