I've had a couple lovely does feeding regularly under my apple trees. One doe is sans fawn(s) and the other has twins. They are pretty used to us and rarely raise their flags.

I have also now become a regular stop for two rather rotund raccoons. One has bright white ears and the other has a bent ear.

As sad as it makes me, I am all done cleaning cemetery stones for the year. I finished last weekend by doing around 40 markers at Quaker Hill. Besides, I need some left to do next year! I need to thank the many volunteers for their help removing the veteran flags for the winter: Pat and Nathan Allen, Rosemary Pillsbury, Lori Nason and her grandsons Grayson and Griffin, Faith Knowlton, Lynn Warman and Denise Whitney.

We hope we have the water line leak issues resolved on Depot Street. We thank Ranger and Littlefield construction companies along with EJ Prescott in finding and replacing about 35 feet of water line buried deep beneath the earth. We also owe Jon Carman a debt of gratitude for working with the companies to ensure that the sewer lines remained intact. He will also be helping map out the lines. The lines were installed in the 1940s and there was no record of where they were laid.

Larry King is one of our great volunteers; this past week he made sure that our new swimming dock came out of the lake for the winter and is safely tucked away.

Neighbor for Neighbor applications for Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets are available in the Town Office lobby on the left hand side when you walk in the door.

The Unity Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary will host a baked bean supper on Saturday, Oct. 22, 4-6 p.m. at the Unity Firehouse on Firehouse Lane. Dinner includes Jacob’s Cattle or Navy beans, hot dog or hamburger, potato salad, coleslaw, dinner roll and gingerbread with fresh whipped cream.

Cost is by donation only. You may dine in or pick up. Proceeds are for firefighters’ grave markers, which will be on display.

At the most recent Planning Board meeting I leafed through the 1919 Annual Town Report. It looked to be a bad year at the schools in 1918 with a lot of missed instruction because of the Spanish flu. They were hoping for improved health within the citizenry so things could go back to normal. The town was also paying by the pound for brown-tail moth carcasses.

Unity has two nominees in the annual Belfast Chamber of Commerce awards. Chase Toys was nominated in the business category; Stone Tree Farm and Cidery was nominated in the new business category.

The “swinging bridge” behind Chase Toys has been rebuilt and is ready for the upcoming snowmobile season. The bridge is also part of the Hills to Sea Trail, so hikers can resume use and avoid the detour. The bridge was originally built in 1971 and the first people to cross it on a snowmobile were Erma Elwell and Dick Chase.

Deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mark Babin who passed away Sept. 28.
